Selling on Amazon UK with a UK limited company

By the Royale Corporate team · Published · Last reviewed · 2 min read

To sell on Amazon UK through a UK limited company you need the company’s details, a verified director with ID and proof of address, a bank account that can receive payouts, and, if you hold stock in UK warehouses, usually a VAT registration and a GB EORI number to import it. Online marketplace VAT rules decide whether Amazon or you account for VAT on each sale.

Key points

  • Amazon verifies the business and the people behind it; keep details consistent with Companies House.
  • Importing FBA stock needs a GB EORI number and a customs declaration.
  • VAT: overseas sellers with UK stock must register from their first sale; UK-established sellers once over £90,000.
  • Marketplaces account for VAT on certain sales by overseas sellers; check which rules apply to you.

Seller account set-up

  • company name, number and registered address exactly as on Companies House;
  • passport or ID and proof of address for the primary contact (usually a director);
  • a bank account in the company’s name that Amazon can pay into;
  • a chargeable credit or debit card;
  • possibly a video call with Amazon to confirm identity.

VAT for Amazon sellers

If your company is established in the UK, the normal £90,000 threshold applies, though many FBA sellers register voluntarily to reclaim import VAT. If the business is not established in the UK and sells goods stored in the UK, it must register from its first sale. Since 2021, online marketplaces are responsible for VAT on goods sold by overseas sellers from stock in the UK, and on imported consignments worth £135 or less. Ask an accountant which applies to you, because getting it wrong is costly.

Importing stock for FBA

  1. Get a GB EORI number for your company.
  2. Use a freight forwarder who will act as your customs agent, with your company as importer of record.
  3. Use postponed VAT accounting if VAT-registered.
  4. Book delivery into Amazon’s fulfilment centres after customs clearance.

A ready-made option

Sellers who want to start quickly often buy a company that already has a VAT number, an EORI number and a business bank account. Amazon still verifies you as the new director, so make sure all details match Companies House after the transfer.

Questions people ask

No; overseas businesses can sell too. A UK company can make UK banking, VAT and customer trust simpler, but it brings UK filing duties.
Amazon mainly verifies identities, documents and bank details. Company age is not a guarantee of approval.
