UK business bank accounts for non-resident directors

By the Royale Corporate team · Published · Last reviewed · 2 min read

High-street UK banks often want directors to live in the UK or visit a branch, so most non-resident owners of UK companies use app-based providers such as Wise Business, Zempler or Mettle, or buy a company with an account already opened. Every provider checks the directors and owners and the business model; eligibility depends on your country of residence and industry.

Key points

  • Traditional banks usually prefer UK-resident directors and UK trading history.
  • E-money and digital providers are more open to overseas directors, with country and industry limits.
  • Expect to provide ID, proof of address, ownership details and a description of the business.
  • E-money accounts are safeguarded rather than covered by the FSCS deposit scheme.

Documents providers ask for

  • passport or national ID for each director and major shareholder;
  • proof of residential address (recent utility bill or bank statement);
  • company registration number and details of who owns and controls it;
  • a short description of what the company sells, to whom, and expected monthly volumes;
  • sometimes a website, contracts or invoices showing the business is real.

Why applications get declined

  • director or owner lives in a country the provider does not serve;
  • high-risk industry (for example crypto, adult, gambling, some financial services);
  • vague business description or no online presence;
  • ownership structure that is hard to follow.

Be specific about your business and keep your documents consistent with Companies House.

Buying a company with an account already open

Royale Corporate sells companies with a Wise, Zempler or Mettle business account already opened. After the transfer the provider carries out its own checks on you as the new director before you get full access. The advantage is that the account and company are already set up; approval still depends on the provider’s checks.

Questions people ask

Yes, but many UK customers, marketplaces and HMRC repayments work best with a UK sort code and account number. Most companies keep at least one UK account.
Wise is an e-money institution, not a bank. Customer money is safeguarded rather than protected by the FSCS deposit guarantee.
